Career Options With Commerce Stream
Another academic year is about to end in the coming months,
albeit a bit late due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The students of all the
streams, namely, Science, Commerce, and Arts/Humanities, are gearing up for the
board exams, leaving no stone unturned. Moreover, they have already started to
ponder over what career to pursue after the board exams. Some of them may have
chosen their career path while others may still be figuring it out.
Choosing an appropriate career is a tough job. It is
difficult to pick one because there are so many good options. Therefore, to
help such students sort out the potential career choices, I have started a
series of posts. I will chart out a list of career options with each stream
combination separately. Further, I will deal with each career option in
subsequent posts. In this post, I am going to talk about various career
options for students of the Commerce stream.

Commerce
The degree in Commerce (B.Com) is the most traditional
course that students tend to pursue after Class 12th. This 3-year course
provides fundamental knowledge on subjects like Accountancy, Economics,
Statistics, Management, Human Resource, etc. It does not have a high difficulty
level in the course structure. Therefore, students choosing this course can
easily practice and pursue other courses to gain specialization in different
fields.
Economics
Economics involves the study of the production, transfer,
and use of goods, services, and resources. It is a research-oriented career
where economists conduct researches and analyze data to predict market trends,
build economic theories and models, and make recommendations for resolving
economic issues. Jobs in this field include working as an economist,
statistician, strategist, risk management analyst, insurance underwriter,
budget analyst, etc.
Management
Management involves the coordination, planning, and
organizing of a company’s processes, to ensure effective functioning and
growth. It is an extensive domain consisting of different roles and
specializations, including operations, marketing, human resource, finance,
sales, etc. You can find numerous job opportunities, both in India and abroad,
in sectors such as consulting, general management, operations management,
supply chain management, etc.
Chartered Accountancy (CA)
Chartered Accountancy is one of the most well-known and
popular career paths for commerce students. CA is a globally recognized
professional certification, regulated by the Institute of Chartered Accountants
of India (ICAI). Typical employment opportunities in this field include
auditing, tax consulting, corporate finance, investment banking, corporate
finance, etc. in government and private organizations.
Company Secretary (CS)
Company Secretary is a professional course conducted by the
Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI). The job of a Company
Secretary involves managing situations involving conflict of interest,
suggesting ways to prepare financial reports, developing corporate strategy,
assisting in planning, and advising on company law. You can work with public
and private sector organizations in areas like corporate governance, foreign
collaborations, financial management, project planning, capital market,
investor relations, corporate advisory services, etc.
Finance
Finance is a vast domain that involves helping businesses
and individuals in making various financial planning decisions, managing assets
and liabilities, monitoring cash flow, and running business operations. A
career in this field requires you to have a good grasp of concepts of economics
and accounting, and analytical thinking. Professional opportunities in this
field include various roles, such as investment banker, financial planner,
financial analyst, etc.
Actuarial Science
Actuarial Science deals with the analysis of risk across
various fields, such as insurance, finance, business, and healthcare.
Professionals in this domain make use of mathematical equations, statistics,
and financial theories to determine risk and uncertainty related to several
future events that may impact a business or an organization. Go for this
exciting field if you enjoy numbers, statistics, and data analysis. You can
find work in various sectors such as life insurance, general insurance, health
insurance, pension funds, actuary consulting firms, investment, risk
management, etc.
Cost and Management Accounting (CMA)
The CMA is a certification provided by the Institute of Cost
Accountants of India (ICAI). Cost and Management Accountants are accountable
for budgeting, cost management, performance evaluation, and asset management
within a company. They work with corporate executives to prepare the financial
plan and strategy of the company. They also prepare financial reports for
various regulatory authorities, creditors, tax authorities, etc.
Stockbroking
Stockbroking is a challenging career that involves buying
and selling stocks on the stock market. Stockbrokers are responsible for
managing investments in stocks and bonds for their clients and advising them
about market fluctuations. You can work with brokerage firms, insurance
companies, banks, investment banks, and other financial institutions.
Statistics
Statistics deals with the interpretation, analysis, and
representation of numerical data. Professionals in this field collect and
analyze data to solve various problems and make recommendations in
organizations. There are numerous opportunities available both in the public
and private sector in roles such as data analysis, big data, market research,
investment analysis, research analysis, risk analysis, etc.
