Career Options With Arts/Humanities Stream
Another academic year, although heavily impacted by the
COVID-19, is about to end in the coming months. Certainly, the students of
all the streams, viz., Science, Commerce, and Arts/Humanities, have begun to
prep for the board exams by now. Moreover, they would have started to think
about what career to pursue after the board exams. Some of them may have chosen
their career path while others may still be figuring it out.
Choosing an appropriate career is a tough job because
there are so many good options. Further, we also do not know which one is
suitable for us. Therefore, to help such students sort out the potential career
choices, I have started a series of posts. I will chart out a list of career
options with each stream combination separately. In this post, I have listed
the different possible career options if you have opted for
the Arts/Humanities stream.

Sociology
Sociology deals with the study of society, culture, the
complexities of human interaction, and patterns of social life. Bachelor of
Arts in Sociology is a course that gives a clear understanding of the ways a
society operates. You can pursue a career in this field if you are keen to
learn about society and its functional aspects. Research institutes, the
criminal justice system, public health and welfare organizations, private
businesses, and international agencies are some of the sectors where
sociologists can find employment opportunities.
Geography
Geography involves the study of diverse environments,
places, and the relationship between humans and the environment. A degree in
Geography can provide you numerous career options with various specializations
such as Cartography, Urban and Regional Planning, and Remote Sensing. You can
be employed as forest managers or in agricultural or economic institutions, and
research organizations as demographers. You can also make your career in the
tourism sector.
Anthropology
Anthropology deals with the study of the origin and the
physical, social, and cultural development and behavior of mankind. Typical
employment opportunities in this field lie in three main areas, viz., teaching,
research, and working in museums. Research jobs can be found in prominent
organizations like the Archaeological Survey of India, the Planning Commission,
and also in reputed international organizations such as UNESCO and UNICEF.
Archaeology
Archaeology is the scientific study of the human past through
material remains. Professionals in this field are concerned with the formation
of past cultures and civilizations. Archaeologists are responsible for carrying
out several tasks such as initial fieldwork, excavation of sites, and their
categorization. You can work as a heritage manager, historic buildings
inspector, museum curator, lecturer, documentation specialist, etc.
Law
With the changing social and economic circumstances, Law as
a profession is in great demand these days. It offers several financially
lucrative and exciting career options for students to explore. A career in Law
requires you to have excellent communication skills, critical and logical
reasoning abilities, and strong analytical skills. You can work as a lawyer,
legal assistant, mediator, court reporter, etc.
Psychology
Psychology deals with the scientific study of the mind, how
it works, and how it might affect behavior. Psychologists primarily focus on
helping people resolve complex emotional issues or developing solutions for
real-world problems. Thus, psychology is a great choice for those who love to
solve challenging practical or theoretical problems. With a degree in
Psychology, you can make your mark in various fields such as clinical
psychology, counseling, educational psychology, sports psychologist, forensic
and rehabilitation psychology.
Library Science
Library in modern times is more than just books. It also
contains periodicals, micro-films, videos, cassettes, and many more. Library
science is concerned with the study that teaches how to manage books and other
stuff, through collecting, preserving, and organizing them in libraries.
Librarians assist people in finding information and they are like the
‘guardian’ of the library. You can also work as a competitive intelligence
analyst, information officer, knowledge management specialist, electronic
resource librarian, etc.
Journalism and Mass Communication
Media is considered to be the fourth pillar of democracy. If
you want to make your mark in this industry, you can go for the Bachelor of
Journalism and Mass Communication course. It is a three-year-long undergraduate
degree program that opens doors for an exciting career in films and TV,
publishing, journalism, editing, and public relations. You can be employed as a
journalist, news reporter, TV correspondent, radio jockey (RJ), public
relations officer, etc.
Fine Arts
Bachelor of Fine Arts is an undergraduate degree course that
enables the students to gain knowledge about visual and performing arts. You
can find numerous opportunities in various art studios, publishing houses,
advertising companies, software companies, fashion houses, etc. You can also opt
for fields such as teaching, direction, photography, and television. Moreover,
you can work as an art director for magazines, commercial art gallery manager,
conservator, exhibition designer, graphic designer, etc.
Hotel Management
Hotel Management is one of the best professional courses
these days. An undergraduate degree program in Hotel Management enables the
students to develop the skills required in the area of food production, front
office operation, housekeeping, catering, food and beverage service, etc.
Typical employment opportunities can be found across a range of public as well
as private enterprises including hotels, theme parks, leisure facilities,
conferences, exhibitions, etc.
Event Management
In modern times, events have become an integral part of our
lives. Be it in the world of music, television, politics, or sports, we are
some way or the other involved in events happening around us. Today, there is a
great demand for event managers in various sectors. A professional course in
Event Management enables the students to develop the essential skills in this
field such as event bidding, project planning, financial reporting, and
marketing for events. A career in Event Management is a good choice for you if
you are looking forward to exploring this field and become a successful event
manager.
Fashion Design
Fashion Designing is an undergraduate degree program that
deals with a vast range of fabrics, styles, patterns, and trends defining the
fashion of a particular era. It is not just about clothes and trends
but also includes accessories, handbags, and footwear. This course helps the
students to develop skills in creating original designs for garments, luggage,
jewelry, footwear, etc., and study the ever-changing fashion trends in the
market. You can find exciting job opportunities in export houses, garment
manufacturing units, textile companies, designer wear showrooms, etc.
