Career Options With Science Stream (PCB)

Another academic year, although heavily impacted by the COVID-19, is about to end in the coming months. Certainly, the students of all the streams, viz., Science (PCM & PCB), Commerce, and Arts/Humanities, have begun to prep for the board exams by now. Moreover, they have already started to ponder over what career to pursue after the board exams. Some of them may have chosen their career path while others may still be figuring it out.

Choosing an appropriate career is always a cumbersome task. It is difficult to pick one because there are so many compelling options. Further, we also do not know which one is suitable for us. Therefore, to help such students sort out the potential career choices, I have started a series of posts. I will chart out a list of career options with each stream combination separately. In this post, I have listed the different possible career options if you have opted for PCB.

Medicine

Most of the students opting for the PCB stream aspire to become a doctor. The undergraduate programs available are MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery), BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery), and BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine & Surgery). All these programs are of 5 years duration and you can go for any of them. Upon completion, you can opt for postgraduate studies for specialization.

Dentistry

Dentistry is a branch of medicine that deals with the oral cavity and teeth. To become a dentist, you can go for the BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) program. This program is of 5 years duration (4 Years for Academic Education + 1 Year for Internship). Further, you can enroll in postgraduate programs for specialization.

Botany

Botany is a distinguished branch of biology that involves the scientific study of plants. Botanists study the interactions of plants with different organisms in their environment, the genetic formation of plants, etc. A degree in Botany can give you immense job opportunities in landscape industries, natural resource centers, environmental consultancies. You can also work as a researcher, professor, taxonomist, environmental consultant, etc.

Zoology

Zoology is another well-established branch of biology concerned with the study of animal life. Those in the field of Zoology analyze the structure, life processes, genetics, physiology, classification, and interactions of various species in detail. With a degree in Zoology, you can work as a researcher, teacher/professor, wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife biologist, zoo curator, etc.

Microbiology

Microbiology deals with the study of microorganisms and their interactions with other organisms in the environment. Microbiologists conduct researches on the physiology, biochemistry, ecology, evolution, and clinical aspects of microorganisms. You can find job opportunities in pharmaceuticals, health sector, food industries, breweries, distilleries, etc. Some typical job profiles in these sectors include clinical researcher, research scientist, lab technician, and quality control inspector.

Biochemistry

Biochemistry is a branch of science that comprises the study of chemical processes and substances within and related to living organisms. Some of the works in this field include improving the process of photosynthesis to improve crop yield, development of a new chemical process to produce biofuel, etc. It is a fast-growing field where you can find many compelling opportunities in various fields. You can work as a biomedical scientist, forensic scientist, teacher/professor, clinical laboratory technologist, pharmaceutical sales representative, patient care coordinator, lab technician, etc.

Genetics

Genetics is devoted to the study of genes and their functions, genetic variations, and heredity of living organisms. Those in the field of Genetics study genetic diseases, anomalies, traits, mutations, interactions of genes with their environment, etc. You can work as a geneticist, immunologist, pharmacologist, forensic DNA analyst, clinical research associate, research scientist, etc.

Bioinformatics

Bioinformatics is the amalgamation of biology, computer science, and information technology. This field includes work on developing and using tools and techniques for analyzing biological data. You can find exciting job opportunities in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, healthcare organizations, and research agencies. Jobs in this field include becoming a bioinformatics analyst, clinical research associate, developer, or medical coder.

Physiology

Physiology is the study of bodily functions, activities, and mechanisms in a living system. Professionals in this field deal with a wide range of topics including anatomy, organs, cells, muscles, and biological compounds, and how they interact and work together to keep the body functional. You can work as a clinical exercise physiologist, biomedical scientist, physiotherapist, researcher, teacher/professor, sports physiologist, etc.

Marine Biology

Marine Biology deals with the study of marine organisms, their behaviors, and interactions with the environment. This field is quite diverse as it covers various aspects of life in the sea and the factors on which it depends. Jobs in this field include becoming an aquaculturist, fishery biologist, researcher, environmental consultant, etc.

Biotechnology

Biotechnology is the fusion of biology and technology. It involves the utilization of living organisms in the industrial process. Some of the prominent works in this field include developing cleaner and safer fuels, developing drugs to deal with deadly diseases, improving the production of food items, etc. You can find job opportunities in pharmaceuticals, healthcare, genetics, or clinical research. You can also work as a laboratory assistant or a field technician.

Biophysics

As the name suggests, Biophysics is the combination of the principles of Physics with those of Biology. It is an advancing field that involves the study of organisms at the cellular and molecular level using the methods and approaches of Physics. You can work as a nuclear medical biophysicist, clinical biophysicist, teacher/professor, forensic biophysicist, nutritional biophysicist, etc.

Biomedical Science

Biomedical Science is the field of study that focuses on the areas of biology and chemistry that are relevant to healthcare. Professionals in this field study how cells, organs, and processes function in the human body, and thus, apply their work to the understanding and treatment of diseases. It is a relatively new but fast-expanding field in India. Jobs in this field include becoming a biomedical scientist, clinical researcher, forensic scientist, toxicologist, immunologist, etc.

Food & Agriculture

Food and Agriculture is an extensive domain that consists of numerous fields such as food science and technology, agronomy, horticulture, dairy technology, agricultural engineering, etc. The career opportunities for each of these fields are very vast. Some of them include process development scientists, product development scientists, agricultural consultants, agricultural managers, etc. You can also work as a horticulturist, floriculturist, food technologist, dairy technologist, soil scientist, animal nutritionist, etc.

Allied Medicine

If you want to pursue a career in Medicine but do not wish to go down the challenging road of an M.B.B.S, then the Allied Medicine domain could be the one for you. This is again a vast domain that consists of different healthcare fields. You can choose from a wide range of careers such as Physiotherapy, Audiology, Medical Lab Technology, Clinical Research, Radiology, etc.
