5 Tips On Work From Home
The Coronavirus
outbreak is bringing unprecedented changes in work culture across the world. As
a result, many companies around the globe have rolled out mandatory work from
home policies amid the spread of COVID-19. E-commerce maestro Amazon, tech
giants Google and Microsoft as well as automobile elites such as Ford are some
of the noteworthy names in this cluster of companies. Social media company
Twitter went one step further by allowing its employees who can work from home to
do so ‘forever’.
World Health Organisation has hinted that Coronavirus may not be leaving soon and we
have to live with it for several years to come. Many countries across the world
are even thinking to tweak labor laws to engage more employees to work from
home to contain the spread of the outbreak.
An estimate says
that at least 4.3 million IT workers or half the sector’s workforce in India
would work from home permanently. Apparently, work from home is going to be a
regular feature of work culture, even in the post-COVID world. It means that
getting accustomed to work-from-home ethics and culture is of utmost necessity
for existing as well as prospective employees. Whether you’re a novice or a
Work-From-Home pro, here are five tips to make your work-from-home expedition
easy and productive.
1. Setup A Proper Workplace
You need to have a properly arranged workplace at first.
Most of the essentials for working from home are the things people already have
with themselves; a desk, a laptop, a phone, and a stable internet connection
but you still need to reassess what more is needed to work facilely.
Make sure your workplace is free from distractions and loud noises.
For example, avoid setting up your office in a living room or a hall where
everyone in the house keeps coming and going out frequently. A calm and
well-lit corner of your bedroom can prove to be a good workplace.
2. Follow A Strict Routine
Set a suitable routine for yourself and do adhere to it
sincerely. Don’t forget that you are there to work and thus you need to get out
of bed and get dressed, you cannot just start it off on your bed sitting in
your pajamas. Switch from home to work mode and set yourself up the right way.
You need to clock in and clock out. Keeping your working
hours similar to that in the office may do the trick to adapt your mind while
working from home. However, you strictly need to stick to the given deadlines.
Missing your deadlines quite often is a sign of your recklessness.
3. Avoid Family During Working Hours
Don’t forget that you are still working and this
necessitates separating your family time from the working hours. If you have
children then you need to realize that you cannot be a parent and an employee
both at the same time. Working from home is not a cheap alternative to getting
a baby-sitter, you simply won’t manage to get any work done.
If possible, close the door while you are working. It is
quite obvious that you won’t be expecting your kids to sneak around your room.
You can have a clear conversation with your family members regarding what not
to do while you are working.
4. Take Scheduled Breaks
Taking regular breaks is the utmost necessary to keep you
afresh and productive. Just because you are feeling comfy at home, it doesn’t
mean you don’t need a proper break. This also includes making sure you make
time to have proper meals and drink water regularly, rather than snacking
continuously throughout the day.
You may worry that you are not being seen as productive when
you are working from home, but nobody is productive when they are hungry.
Therefore, keep yourself well-fed and hydrated throughout the day.
5. Keep In Touch With Your Colleagues
Try to be in regular touch with your colleagues. The worst
aspect of working-from-home can be the feeling of being lonely. You may be
missing the usual tap of fingers on keyboards and consistent chatter of your
co-workers (although, some of you may like to be a lone wolf). One of the
tactics to avoid loneliness is to set up a video call with a colleague while
you are working on a shared project. Keep in contact with your managers too,
and ask them to keep in contact with you for their valuable insights.
Always remember, whatever kind of communications system
you’re using to keep in touch with your team, turn it on when you start and
turn it off when you stop. Working outside of these hours will just grind you
down.
